“Right here! Get Set! Point! Fire!”

Sounds like bullshit to me.  Bonus points to anyone who can figure out WHY I say that.

Because the normal command is “aim” instead of “point?”

Yeah. You don’t point a rifle.

This sounds like hysterical bullshit to me.

Know what’s bullshit? Sending out the army to shoot and kill kids who are demonstrating.

We don’t disagree on that, of course, but I don’t think that the intent of sending the national guard was to have a massacre, and to assert that is to cheapen the discussion into waving a bloody shirt.

Of course, you’re entitled to believe whatever you want. But in this case, there’s just no reason that I can think of to order the entire unit to fire on the crowd. I think that what would have normally happened if it felt like an emergency to the Nat. Guard unit, they would have fired a volley into the air, which would have been the RIGHT thing to do if the confrontation had escalated to that point.

But you can tragedy pimp your own agenda if you feel the need. Just realize that you do so at great expense to your credibility.

Ouch! I hate it when my credibility is ruined. Hey, can’t we just agree that it’s bad to kill unarmed student demonstrators, and leave it at that?

Look, the army is trained for combat, against an adversary that is similarly trained and gunning for them. This was even more true in the 70’s than it is now, but even today nobody is quicker to complain that they’re not trained for “police work” than the army itself. So I call bullshit on whomever thought it was a good idea to send a military force to control a student demonstration. That in itself was irresponsible and dangerous. If an officer gave the order to fire on a group of civilians, I think “bullshit” is a fair description of that action. If a nervous guardsman got an itchy trigger finger and started the shooting on his own, whether in fear or anger, more of the same.

That said, I admit it does seem weird that the word “point” was used, instead of “aim.” But my understanding is that the tape is nearly unintelligible, and someone is trying to get it analyzed to find out if it’s authentic, and what’s really on it. I am not aware of any hysteria.

I’m sorry to get you all fired up. I didn’t mean anything personal against you.

“…tragedy pimp your own agenda…” Wow, you are tough.
